Island Rumble 3: Triple Threat (2023)

Background

Drawing inspiration from the original Street Fighter video game, this play centered its action around a fictional game titled “Island Rumble 3.”

Due to the small nature of the theatre space, there was no way to show the game’s visuals; instead, all video game rounds and effects had to be conveyed sonically through audio design.

Inspiration

The design was heavily inspired by the original Street Fighter’s world, however, with modern twists. The goal of the design was to create a sonic world for the game that incorporated a wide range of nostalgic 80s and 90s sounds (ie, Arcade games and Game Boys), blending them with modern synths and manipulation.

All character sounds were based on previous open-archive Street Fighter sounds and layered over original music compositions for each world within Island Rumble. The actors would play along with consoles to show physical action, while the audience would hear each sequence without any game visuals.

All world tracks, theme songs, and pause tracks were completely original, blending classic gaming sounds with the new era of digital gaming. The goal of these compositions was to source sounds from classic games, such as the sound of Pac-Man, and layer them to make unique background ambience. This was incredibly important as the audience had no visual representation of what this game looked like, so their entire perception of Island Rumble was reliant on the sound design.

The Opening Sequence grabs classic Street Fighter sound bites and pairs them with a 90’s rock-inspired composition that serves as the Main Theme song for Island Rumble 3: Triple Threat. This sequence is what began the show.

The Pause Music is the Main Theme put through a modulator on LogicPro that slowed and reversed the original theme’s melody. On top of this, reverb and new synth layers were added to create a more muted background effect.
